Nikon's latest consumer DSLR, Nikon D5100, is a member of the popular D5000 series meant for the enthusiastic photographer. The DSLR camera is built with 23.6 x 15.6 mm CMOS image sensor and EXPEED 2 processor giving you exquisite image quality at 16.2 megapixels. You can record videos in Full-HD mode at 1920 x 1080p (24, 25, 30 fps).

Body

The Nikon D5100 weighs 509 g, with dimensions of 129 x 97 x 79 mm. The camera is compact and has a rounded firm hand grip. The camera has an eye level pentamirror optical viewfinder with 0.78 x magnification and a 95 percent field of view.

This Nikon digital SLR camera's hallmark feature is the vari-angle 3-inch TFT LCD screen with 921,000 dot pixels for a truly enjoyable Live View at any angle. This articulated LCD opens 180 degrees to the left and can be rotated up to 90 degrees clockwise. It also moves 180 degrees anti-clockwise for a more comfortable view when your DSLR is tripod bound.

A convenient lever is placed at the top of the DSLR which lets you switch to Live Mode with one easy move. The Video Record button is placed next to the shutter release for easy access to record those sudden yet fleeting moments. This SLR camera has a rechargeable Li-Ion EN-EL14 battery with which you can take 660 shots when completely charged. As for storage, you can use SD, SDHC or SDXC memory cards to store your photos and videos on the camera.

Performance

The D5100 comes with a lens that is fitted on a Bayonet Nikon F mount. The focal length of the lens is 18 - 55 mm and its aperture range of f/3.5 - 5.6. The D5100 comes with 11 point auto focus sensor and 3D tracking facility allows for superior photography. The 3D tracking helps you automatically sharp focus moving objects by predicting its movement.

The ISO sensitivity of the Nikon DSLR ranges from 100 to 6400. You can extended up to a whopping 25600 equivalent to give you better results in dim light situations. The four noise reduction settings give you the freedom to shoot good pictures in any lighting. The shutter speed ranges from 1/4000 - 30 sec in, and also includes bulb setting for long exposures. The Nikon D5100 DSLR has built in pop up flash with several sync modes and a hot shoe for external flash.

Features & Connectivity

This Nikon DSLR comes with anti - dust systems like image sensor cleaning and airflow control, which gives you spotless images every time and increases the durability of the image sensor. High Dynamic Range (HDR) is another noteworthy feature of the Nikon D5100 camera. With every click of the shutter release, High Dynamic Range (HDR) feature takes two shots at varying exposures which are combined by the camera to give you a perfectly exposed image.

The D5100 is the first Nikon DSLR camera designed with in-camera filter and editing effects in still and video mode. Special effects like Selective Colour, Miniature Effect, Colour Sketch, Night Vision and the likes enriches your photographs and videos. The D5100 has the ability to detect 35 faces simultaneously for those memorable group photos. The self-timer setting with options ranging from 2 to 20 sec allows you ample time to be a part of your photographs.

You can get continuous shooting speed of 4 fps and Active D-Lighting with your Nikon D5100 DSLR. The Nikon also has a built in microphone and added provision for an external one. The two IR sensors lets you can connect your camera wirelessly via Wi-Fi. You can save images as either RAW or JPEG and videos is MOV format. The camera has high speed USB 2.0 port. You can also optionally connect your Nikon D5100 to a GPS device to Geotag your photos and videos. The camera is HDMI compatible and can be connect with an HD output monitor via an optional cable.
